What to Pack for the Rwenzori Mountains Hike: When you hike Mount Rwenzori, you use essential equipment to navigate the adventure on these mountains. The Rwenzori Mountains are snow-capped in western Uganda, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” The Margherita Peak, at 5109 meters, marks the highest point on the mountain, and the right equipment helps you reach it through its different zones. You will pack various equipment for your Rwenzori Mountains hike, including camping, cooking, photography, lighting, trekking poles, and personal items. You can rent some of this equipment at an affordable price, ranging from approximately 5 USD to 30 USD, or you can carry your equipment.

Camping Equipment

For your Mount Rwenzori hike, you will include the following camping equipment:

  • Sleeping bags you can pitch at the mountain’s various camping grounds.
  • Sleeping tents, which can be single or double tents. Some camps also offer hut accommodation on the mountain.
  • Mattresses.
  • Sleeping bag liners also help keep dust off the sleeping bags.

Cooking Equipment

You will also find cooking equipment important for your hikes on Mount Rwenzori, as cooks prepare meals as they move with you.

  • Cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, and spatulas.
  • Foodstuffs you purchase before the hike. You carry it along and prepare it at the different camps where you spend your nights. Some items include energy-giving foods and snacks, and foods rich in carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and proteins.
  • A light stove for preparing meals.
  • Utensils such as cups, plates, cooking pans, and kettles.

We recommend three meals a day for hikers on the mountain. The recommended food types include carbohydrates, which help with altitude sickness and provide the energy you need to hike, as altitude can affect your diet. Hydration is also important during hikes on Mount Rwenzori due to the high intensity involved in hiking the mountain. We recommend about 2 to 3 liters of water for hiking on the mountain, and it also helps with altitude sickness.
