Singita Kwitonda Lodge is named after a famous silverback gorilla. It sits on 178 acres of land and shares a 1.2km border with Volcanoes National Park. This makes it the only lodge so close to the park.
The lodge is located at the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, home to over a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Its position offers easy access to unforgettable gorilla trekking experiences. Kwitonda Lodge has eight luxury suites. Each suite features a private heated plunge pool, an outdoor fireplace, and large windows that offer stunning views of the volcanoes and the surrounding landscape.
The design of the lodge reflects its dramatic surroundings. Local artisans built woven ceilings and terracotta brick walls. Inside, the lodge also has a dedicated Conservation Room, as well as a nursery and vegetable garden. These spaces help provide fresh, farm-to-table meals for guests, making the dining experience even more special.

About Singita Kwitonda Lodge
The dense cloud forests of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park are indescribably beautiful. They’re also home to one-third of the world’s most critically endangered species – the mountain gorilla. It’s here, surrounded by wetlands and lush meadows on the edge of the park, that Singita Collection’s new Kwitonda opened in August 2019. The lodge has easy access to the forest and the gentle giants so beloved by gorilla researcher and activist Dian Fossey (portrayed by Sigourney Weaver in Gorillas in the Mist). It has a contemplative atmosphere, emotionally moving primate encounters, and dramatic views of three of the park’s volcanoes.

Kwitonda will be accessed via road transfer from Kigali International Airport, a journey of three-and-a-half hours. And right now, Singitaise is accepting bookings for Kwitonda, situated in the spectacular Volcanoes National Park.
Accommodation & Facilities at Singita Kwitonda Lodge
Singita Kwitonda Lodge: At present, we have very few details concerning the interiors of the communal building, but we understand that the views will be spectacular, featuring the Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura volcanoes. The guest accommodation, situated within lush meadows and wetlands, will also boast amazing vistas into the national park. It will be connected to the central building along pathways made out of volcanic rock. Of the eight suites, seven will contain one bedroom, with the remaining suite offering two. The four-bedroom villa will be fantastic for an extended family or group. We’ll update this section as soon as we can.
Activities At Singita Kwitonda Lodge
As far as activities are concerned, guests at Kwitonda will be invited to participate in gorilla treks, forest walks, and trips to Kigali. Volcanoes National Park is famous for its population of mountain gorillas. Singita’s new lodge is named after a splendid male silverback who was cherished for his gentle nature. At the time of writing, the park is home to 10 habituated gorilla groups! Treks into the forest to see the magnificent mammals can last from just an hour to 5–7 hours. The experience of seeing the gorillas in their natural habitat is well worth the longer hikes!
Along the way, you may spot many smaller species, including the golden monkey, side-striped jackal, elephant, buffalo, and black-fronted duiker, alongside brilliant birdlife. Guides also invite guests to walk through the Afro-montane forest of Nyungwe. This national park is popular with chimpanzees, as well as monkeys, jackals, and so on. Finally, trips into Kigali will also be possible to check out the capital city’s monuments and museums, galleries, and golf course – and much more besides!

What is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla Trekking is the act of finding the gorillas, which is done by a team of highly qualified trackers. In the Volcanoes National Park, these trackers head for the hills very early in the morning to find the gorillas before the tourists start their trek. They will return to where they left the gorillas the day before, and then they will stay with them all day until the gorillas make their nest for the evening. Only then do these trackers come home.
Meanwhile, tourists will follow their guide to the location of the trackers. So before you even set off in the morning, the guides already know where the gorillas are, as the trackers will have told them as much. Because of this, the chances of spotting wild gorillas in Volcanoes National Park are very high. Safari companies will say there is a 99% chance of seeing them. During the briefing, they will say 80%. Either way, considering you are tracking wild animals, there is a very high probability that you will get lucky. The most likely reason for you not seeing them is that you find the hike too challenging and decide to turn around. The other reason is if those gorillas get spooked
The cost of Gorilla Trekking permits in Rwanda
Singita Kwitonda Lodge: A Gorilla trekking permit costs $1,500 per person. This fee includes park entrance, ranger guide, and gorilla group tracking. The cost is the same whether you trek in Volcanoes National Park or any other designated area.
Booking your permit is a simple process. First, you need to contact a trusted tour operator like Anthill Safaris. We will help you book your permit and arrange your accommodation and transportation. You can also book directly through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), but using a tour operator is easier and more convenient.
To secure a permit, you should book it several months in advance, especially during peak seasons like June to September. Availability can be limited, so it is best to reserve early. A valid passport is required when booking your permit. The RDB will ask for details like your full name, nationality, and passport number.
After your permit is confirmed, your tour operator will send you all the necessary information, such as your trekking date, briefing time, and meeting point. You will also receive information on what to wear and what to bring for the trek.
If you need to cancel, you can get a refund. However, this only applies if you cancel at least two months before your trekking date. If you cancel closer to the date, the refund may be partial or unavailable.
What to expect when tracking gorillas in Volcanoes?
Gorilla trekking starts early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. After the briefing, visitors are assigned to small groups and led by experienced guides. Trekking can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. Once the gorillas are found, visitors spend one hour observing them from a safe distance.
You will then head into an auditorium, and while everyone else gets checked in, you will have the pleasure of watching a local dance group perform. They lifted the mood in the room with their energetic dance moves and storytelling choreographies.

In the dry seasons, the trails are less muddy, and it’s easier to spot the gorillas. You can also enjoy clearer views of the beautiful surroundings. However, this is also the peak season, so there may be more tourists. As a result, it’s a good idea to book your trek early.
On the other hand, the rainy season lasts from March to May and October to November. While the rain may make the trails muddy, it’s a quieter time for trekking. You will find fewer tourists, which means less crowded treks. The gorillas are still active, and you can have a peaceful experience in nature.
Ultimately, the best time for gorilla trekking depends on your preferences. If you prefer better weather and clearer trails, visit during the dry season. If you want a quieter experience, consider the rainy season. Regardless of when you visit, Rwanda offers an unforgettable adventure.
How to Get To Volcanoes National Park
Singita Kwitonda Lodge: Rwanda welcomes most visitors through Kigali International Airport (KGL), about 10km/6 mi from the capital, Kigali. Volcanoes National Park is about 100 kilometers and 2 hours away on the surfaced road. There are no scheduled domestic flights to the park. You’ll most probably use a 4×4 car to transfer across the country from the Airport.
The gorilla trekking activity in Volcanoes starts before 08:00, and all trekkers must report to the park headquarters in Kinigi by 07:00.

What to wear for a gorilla trek in Rwanda?
The trek can take between 1 to 6 hours, and you need to be comfortable throughout. Below are the essential clothing items recommended for a gorilla trek in Rwanda.
- Long-sleeved shirts protect your skin from thorny plants, critters, and insect bites.
- Good, strong, waterproof, and knee-length boots. They should be well-prepared to avoid blisters and discomfort during the trek.
- Long, thick socks.
- Trekking trousers. If possible, get lightweight, waterproof pants and avoid wearing jeans because they will slow you down when they get heavy.
- Waterproof adjustable gaiters.
- A waterproof rain jacket or coat is to be carried during the dry and wet seasons.
Some of the Gorilla Trekking Rules in Rwanda
Singita Kwitonda Lodge: It would help if you listened closely to the rules and regulations laid out because they protect the already endangered Mountain gorillas so that they can still be available for trekking for other tourists to participate in the activity. The trekking rules and regulations include:
- If you wish to spend more time with the gorillas, you can opt for the habituation process, which takes about 4 hours.
- Under no circumstances is flash photography allowed.
- You are to keep a distance of 7 meters between you and the gorillas at all times.
- The national parks must be kept clean throughout, and all the rubbish must be disposed of properly in the bins.
- Ensure that as you go to the toilet, you dig a hole 30 cm deep, cover it up properly, and use a biodegradable toilet.
- Noise should be limited when trekking and with the gorillas to avoid disrupting the peace of the primates.
- The minimum trek age in Uganda is 15 years.
