The Trekking Challenge
Nkuringo does not ease you in gently. Treks take place at altitudes between 3,000 and 5,000 metres above sea level, and the terrain demands your full attention from the first step. Most trails begin with a sharp descent into deep valley floors, which means the return journey requires a long, continuous uphill climb back to the ridge. The forest itself adds another layer of challenge — you push through tangled vines, dense bamboo thickets, and paths made slippery by mud and morning rain.
Beyond that, the timing is never guaranteed. A trek can take as little as two hours or stretch to seven, depending on how far the gorilla family has moved into the bush that morning. On a good morning, you can also spot Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira across the border in the Democratic Republic of Congo — both active volcanoes that send faint wisps of smoke into the sky.
Below the ridge, Lake Mutanda spreads out across the valley floor, its island-dotted waters catching the light through gaps in the forest canopy. The Gorilla Families
Four habituated gorilla families call the Nkuringo sector home, each with its own personality and group dynamics.
Nkuringo Family: The original habituated group in this sector. With 19 members, this tight-knit family is well known for its lively social interactions, making every encounter entertaining and full of movement.
Posho Family: Also 19 members strong, the Posho family is one of the largest single tracking groups in the entire national park. Spending time with them gives you a real sense of how complex and organised gorilla social life truly is.
Bushaho Family: A group of 12, celebrated among trekkers for its high number of playful infants. If watching young gorillas tumble, chase, and wrestle is on your wishlist, Bushaho is the family to request.
Christmas Family: Smaller and more relaxed at just six members, the Christmas group tends to stay closer to the outer bamboo zones. Their calm nature makes them ideal for trekkers who prefer a quieter, more observational experience.

How to Get to Nkuringo
Nkuringo lies in the far southwest of Uganda, close to the Rwandan border. You can reach it by air or road, and both options have their merits.
By Air
Flying is the fastest option. Book a scheduled or charter flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip. Aerolink Uganda runs daily morning flights, and the journey takes one to two hours. From Kisoro, a 4×4 vehicle transfer of around one and a half to two hours along mountain roads brings you to the sector.
By Road from Kampala
Nkuringo Sector: Challenging Treks and Stunning Views: Drive south from Kampala through Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale to Kisoro, then branch off at Muko onto a dirt road for the final 34 to 38 kilometres to the sector. Expect nine to eleven hours of driving across roughly 500 kilometres. A 4×4 vehicle is not optional — the final stretch becomes genuinely treacherous in wet conditions.
By Road from Kigali
If you fly into Rwanda, the drive to Nkuringo is significantly shorter. Travel north from Kigali through either the Cyanika or Katuna border crossing, and you reach the sector in four to five hours, depending on how quickly you clear customs.
