How to Plan Your Bwindi Safari

Getting There

Most international visitors arrive through Entebbe International Airport in Uganda, which sits about 460 kilometres from Bwindi. From Entebbe, you can travel to the park by road or by chartered light aircraft. Anthill Safaris recommends using a professional driver or joining a guided tour for the road journey, as the routes through the Ugandan highlands can be challenging. If you are travelling from Rwanda, Kigali International Airport is your closest entry point. However, the drive from Kigali to Bwindi takes approximately four to six hours, depending on which sector you plan to visit.

Best Time to Visit

Bwindi is open to visitors year-round. However, the best conditions for trekking fall during the two dry seasons. In addition, the long dry season runs from June to August, and the short dry season covers December to February. During these months, trails are firmer, and the forest is easier to move through. If you visit during the rainy seasons, paths become muddy and steep slopes grow slippery, so you should prepare accordingly.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority issues all official gorilla permits. Current permit prices are as follows:

Please note that new pricing for Gorilla Habituation  Permits takes effect on January 1, 2027. From that date, fees will change to:

  • East African Community citizens: UGX 750,000

Because only four permits are available per habituation group each day, availability fills up quickly. However, To an international traveler, this reads as if only 8 people in total can see the gorillas in Bwindi every day. You need to clarify that it is 8 permits per habituated family per day.
