Kilimanjaro and Rwenzori Mountains: Which is Better for Hiking? At Anthill Safaris, we consider East Africa home to some of the most extraordinary hiking experiences on the planet. Two mountains stand above the rest: Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda. Both offer breathtaking scenery, unforgettable challenges, and memories that stay with you long after you return home. If you are trying to decide which mountain to tackle first, this guide will help you make that choice with confidence.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and sits in northeastern Tanzania, approximately 140 kilometres south of Nairobi along the Kenyan border. Its iconic snow-capped peak draws thousands of hikers every year, and for good reason. Kilimanjaro offers seven distinct hiking routes, each with its own character, scenery, and level of difficulty.
The seven routes include the Machame, Umbwe, Marangu, Lemosho, Rongai, Northern Circuit, and Shira routes. The Rongai route is the most scenic and straightforward option for first-time climbers. The Lemosho and Northern Circuit routes are equally rewarding and provide excellent acclimatisation time. The Marangu route is the oldest path up the mountain and the only one offering permanent dormitory-style accommodation along the way. The Machame route delivers stunning views throughout, while the Shira route presents a slightly more demanding challenge.
As you climb Kilimanjaro, you pass through five distinct climate zones. The journey begins in a lowland tropical forest between 1,850 and 2,800 metres. Next, you move through shrubland at around 3,000 metres before entering a rocky, arid zone at 4,000 metres that resembles a lunar landscape. Higher still, you reach a glacial and desert setting, partially snow-capped, though the glaciers have been slowly retreating over recent decades.
Acclimatisation is essential on Kilimanjaro. Anthill Safaris always advises guests to choose routes that allow enough time at altitude before pushing for the summit. This single factor dramatically improves your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully.
Sample itineraries range from six days on the Marangu route to nine days on the Northern Circuit. The Machame and Lemosho routes each take approximately six days, while the Rongai route covers six days as well. The Umbwe route, one of the more direct and demanding options, can be completed in six days by experienced hikers.
Mount Rwenzori
The Rwenzori Mountains stretch across the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, covering roughly 120 kilometres in length and 65 kilometres in width. The range consists of six major peaks. Mount Stanley is the highest at 5,109 metres above sea level, followed by Mount Speke at 4,890 metres, Mount Emin at 4,798 metres, Mount Baker at 4,843 metres, Mount Gessi at 4,715 metres, and Mount Luigi di Savoia at 4,627 metres.
Rwenzori is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most dramatic and rewarding hikes. Treks to the summit and back typically take between seven and twelve days, depending on the route you choose.
Three main routes run through the Rwenzori Mountains. The Central Circuit Trail is the most popular option among both experienced and novice hikers. It is the oldest trail on the mountain, leads directly to Margherita Peak, and takes you through five distinct vegetation zones, across valleys and gorges, and up to the rocky summit.
The Kilembe Trail, also known as the southern circuit route, is the longest route and gives hikers the most time to acclimatise properly. Rwenzori Trekking Services manages this trail, and new huts have been built along the way to improve comfort. Most hikers complete this route in seven to eight days.
The Bukurungu Trail is the newest addition to the Rwenzori hiking options. It features safe camping sites rather than huts and offers spectacular views of several beautiful lakes, including Bujuku, Irene, Mughuli, and Bukurungu. This route takes approximately eight days to reach Margherita Peak.
Why Anthill Safaris Recommends Hiking Both Mountains
Both Kilimanjaro and Rwenzori are snow-capped ranges that reward hikers with extraordinary scenery and a deep sense of achievement. While guides often describe them as beginner-friendly, both mountains genuinely require intermediate fitness and preparation. Together, they offer two of the most adventurous experiences available anywhere in East Africa, and combining both into one extended safari creates a journey that very few travellers ever forget.
What to Pack
Packing smart makes a significant difference on both mountains. Anthill Safaris recommends bringing warm layers, including sweaters, jackets, long-sleeved shirts, and thick socks. Add a waterproof rain jacket, a waterproof backpack, and strong hiking boots to your list. Garden gloves protect your hands from the cold at higher altitudes. A sun hat, sunglasses, and a beanie cover you across all conditions. Carry a first aid kit, camera, and plenty of snacks to keep your energy up throughout the trek.
Important Things to Know Before You Climb
Choose your route carefully. Talk to your Anthill Safaris guide about which route suits your fitness level and experience. Prepare your body thoroughly before the trip, focusing on leg strength, ankle stability, and overall endurance. Altitude sickness affects many hikers as oxygen levels drop with increasing elevation. Medication and the climb-high, sleep-low method both help your body adjust gradually and reduce the risk of having to turn back.
Best Time to Hike
Kilimanjaro and Rwenzori Mountains: Which is Better for Hiking? Both mountains are open to hikers year-round. However, the best conditions fall during the dry seasons, which run from June to September and from December to February. July through October offers the driest and most stable weather, though trails are busier during this period. Heavy rain falls consistently from March through May, turning trails slippery and blocking the beautiful views you would otherwise enjoy. For this reason, Anthill Safaris considers this period the least ideal time to plan your mountain climb.
