Gorilla Habituation Experiences Rules and Regulations. Gorilla habituation brings you face-to-face with semi-habituated mountain gorillas for four full hours. To protect the forest and limit disruption, only four tourists can join researchers and rangers on each habituation experience. Uganda is currently the only country where you can do this. However, before any gorilla family opens for trekking, rangers and researchers must first complete the habituation process.

What Is Gorilla Habituation?

Gorilla habituation is the process of gradually getting a wild mountain gorilla family comfortable around humans without changing their natural behavior. The process can take more than two years, depending on how quickly the gorilla family adjusts. Protecting mountain gorillas remains the top priority in Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC Congo. Therefore, following every rule is not optional — it is essential.

Rules for the Journey to the Gorillas

Before you reach the gorillas, several important rules apply. First, wear a clean mask and change into a fresh one just before meeting the gorillas. Since gorillas share about 96% of human DNA, they are highly vulnerable to human infections. Also, sanitize your shoes before entering the forest.

Next, keep your voice low at all times. Gorillas are extremely sensitive to unfamiliar sounds and will alert the rest of the family if they feel threatened. Additionally, if you have any contagious illness such as a cough, cold, or cholera, stay behind. Mountain gorillas have grown from roughly 300 in the 1980s to over 1,000 today, and a disease outbreak could reverse that progress quickly.

Furthermore, stay in a tight group throughout the hike. Moving around randomly makes gorillas feel threatened, as they may interpret scattered movement as an ambush.

Rules When You Are With the Gorillas

Once you locate the gorillas, a different set of rules takes effect. Do not use flash photography under any circumstances. Flash frightens gorillas, so always wait for the ranger to assess their mood before raising your camera. Moreover, never provoke the gorillas in any way. Their reaction to provocation is unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

If you need to eat or smoke, move at least 300 meters away from the gorillas first. Gorillas are wild animals that must find their own food, and human food can disrupt their natural habits. Also, only persons aged 15 and above can participate in gorilla habituation. The terrain is steep and slippery in many areas, making it unsuitable and unsafe for younger children.

General Health Rules in the Forest

Several health rules also apply throughout the experience. If you feel sick, volunteer to stay behind. Your cooperation directly protects the gorillas. If you need to use the toilet, ask your ranger to dig a hole at least 30 centimeters deep and cover it properly afterward.

Carry all your litter out of the forest. Leaving garbage behind can alter the forest environment where gorillas feed. Similarly, avoid spitting on vegetation, since gorillas eat leaves and foliage and could consume your germs. If you need to sneeze or cough, turn away from the gorillas and cover your mouth with a handkerchief or your elbow.

Maintain a distance of at least 8 meters from the gorillas at all times. If a gorilla moves toward you, calmly step back to restore the gap. You are allowed four hours with the gorillas once located. During this time, be patient and respectful. The dominant silverback will assert his authority, so follow every instruction from your guide calmly and quietly.

How Much Does a Gorilla Habituation Permit Cost?

The gorilla habituation permit costs $1,500 per person for foreign non-residents, $1,000 for foreign residents, and UGX 750,000 for East African citizens. The permit covers ranger guide fees, park fees, security, gorilla conservation, community support, a completion certificate, and your four hours with the gorillas. However, it excludes tips, porters, packed lunches, and personal items.

The price is absolutely worth it. Every dollar you pay supports the ongoing conservation campaign that has helped mountain gorilla numbers grow steadily. Only four habituation permits are released daily, and only two gorilla families are currently open for habituation, making this a rare and exclusive experience.

Can You Reschedule a Permit?

Gorilla Habituation Experiences Rules and Regulations. Yes, you can reschedule. Write to the Uganda Wildlife Authority explaining your reason and include supporting evidence. Uganda allows two free reschedules. A third request requires approval from the Executive Director and attracts a 25% surcharge on the total permit cost. Rescheduling is subject to availability.
