Starting from Kigali, this immersive Congo wildlife adventure offers unforgettable primate encounters and conservation experiences.
You will leave Kigali early and drive to the Rwanda-Congo border. At the border, you will check in at Virunga offices by 1:00 PM to collect permits for gorilla and volcano treks. These permits are essential for your trekking activities and must be presented before starting. After completing the formalities, you will proceed to Mikeno Camp, where you will stay for the night. This scenic journey takes approximately four hours and offers great views of the surrounding landscapes.
Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge
Begin your day with an early breakfast at Mikeno Camp. Afterward, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing. Here, the ranger guides will explain the trekking guidelines and provide essential safety tips. You will then set off with your ranger guide to search for mountain gorillas. The trek may take a few hours, depending on the gorillas’ location. Once you find the gorillas, you will spend one magical hour observing them in their natural environment. After this incredible encounter, return to the headquarters before heading back to Mikeno Camp for the night.
Enjoy another day of gorilla trekking in a different section of the park. After breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing. The second trek offers a chance to see another gorilla family and appreciate the park’s biodiversity. You will again spend one hour with the gorillas once they are located. After the trek, proceed to a different lodge for an overnight stay. This allows you to experience another side of Virunga National Park.
Start your day early for chimpanzee trekking, which begins with a briefing from the ranger guides. You will walk through the forest, guided by the rangers, until you find the chimpanzees. Once you locate them, spend one hour observing their behavior and interactions. After this fascinating experience, return to Mikeno Lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage, which cares for orphaned gorillas rescued from difficult situations. This visit provides insight into conservation efforts and the challenges of protecting mountain gorillas.
After breakfast at Mikeno Lodge, your driver-guide will take you back to Kigali. The drive takes about five hours and includes short stops for stretching and lunch. You will arrive in Kigali later in the day, marking the end of your 5-day safari adventure.
