On arrival at Kigali International Airport, a friendly representative from Iconic Africa Safaris will warmly welcome you. After a short briefing, you will drive to Gisenyi, located on the stunning shores of Lake Kivu. This journey offers scenic views of rolling hills and serene countryside landscapes. Upon reaching Gisenyi, you will check into your hotel and relax. The evening allows you to enjoy the beautiful lake scenery.

After breakfast, your driver will take you to the Grande Barriere border post by 12:15 pm. At Virunga National Park’s tourism office, you will check in and collect permits for gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hiking. These permits must be presented at the start of each activity. After completing the formalities, you will cross into Congo and transfer to Kibumba Tented Camp. Upon arrival, you will check into your tented accommodation and relax, preparing for the next day’s adventure.

After an early breakfast, you will head to Bukima Ranger Post for a briefing by ranger guides. The guides will provide essential safety and trekking instructions. You will then hike through the forest in search of a mountain gorilla family. The trek lasts 1 to 2.5 hours, depending on the gorillas’ locationr and the terrain. Once you locate the gorillas, you will spend one magical hour observing their behaviors and taking photos. After the trek, you will return to the camp for lunch. Later, you may opt for a relaxing nature walk or bird-watching activity.

Enjoy breakfast before transferring to the Kibati Ranger Post at 8:15 am for a pre-hike briefing. Here, you can hire porters to assist with carrying luggage. The hike to Nyiragongo’s summit takes about six hours, depending on your fitness level. The trail passes through lava rocks, lush forest, and open spaces with breathtaking views. Once at the summit, you will marvel at the glowing lava lake, emitting a brilliant red hue. The incredible scenery and photo opportunities make this experience unforgettable. Spend the evening taking in the stunning views of the crater and its surroundings.

After an early breakfast, you will begin descending Nyiragongo Volcano, which takes approximately four hours. Upon reaching the base, your driver will transfer you back to the Grande Barriere border post. After completing border formalities, you will drive to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may proceed to the airport for departure or to a hotel for further arrangements.
