Food Is Becoming Harder to Find
Gorillas eat more than 140 plant species. They browse on leaves, stems, bark, and fruit throughout the year. During certain seasons, bamboo dominates their diet and can make up nearly 90% of what they eat. However, bamboo is highly sensitive to changes in rainfall. Too little water prevents it from regrowing after gorillas feed on it. Too much rain invites fungal diseases that wipe out entire bamboo stands. Either way, gorillas lose a critical food source.
Beyond bamboo, the timing of plant growth is shifting. Rainfall patterns that used to be predictable are now erratic. Flowers bloom at the wrong time. New leaves appear out of season. Gorillas have spent thousands of years tuning their movements to these natural rhythms, and those rhythms are now breaking down. Additionally, rising carbon dioxide in the atmosphere changes the quality of plant leaves. They grow with less protein and more fiber, which means gorillas must eat more to get the same nutrition. Gorillas rarely drink directly from streams. They usually get enough water from the moist plants they eat and from dew and rainfall in their humid forest home. However, as forests dry out, that passive water supply is shrinking. Gorillas are increasingly moving toward streams, rivers, and other open water sources to quench their thirst.
This shift in behavior brings new dangers. When gorillas leave the deep forest to find water, they enter areas closer to human settlements. On the opposite end, prolonged dry spells create wildfire conditions that were once almost unheard of in these wet mountain forests. A fast-moving fire can burn through critical gorilla habitat in hours. Survivors are forced into areas that may already be occupied, triggering territorial conflict and further stress.

Climate change does not affect gorillas in isolation. It also puts pressure on the millions of people who live near gorilla habitats.
