Your permit document carries your full name as it appears on your passport, your trekking date, the location of the activity, and a unique identification number. On the day of your trek, the park warden checks your printed permit alongside your passport before you join the briefing.

Can You Get Last-Minute Permits?

Yes, last-minute chimpanzee permits are sometimes available, unlike gorilla permits, which sell out much faster. However, during the high season — June to September and December to February — demand rises significantly, and availability is not guaranteed. Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy

If your plans change, UWA allows cancellations and refunds based on how far in advance you cancel. The policy applies only if you have paid in full — a 30% deposit booking does not qualify for a refund.

The refund structure is as follows: cancel more than 91 days before your trek and receive a 75% refund. Cancel 46 to 90 days before and receive 50%. Cancel 9 to 45 days before and receive 25%. However, cancel within eight days and receive no refund.

If a park warden determines on the day that you cannot trek due to illness, UWA refunds 50% of your permit fee. This rule exists because human diseases — especially flu and cough — pose serious health risks to chimpanzees.

You may reschedule your permit once for free before the seven-day mark. A second reschedule attracts a 25% surcharge on the original permit cost. All rescheduling must happen within one year of your original booking date.

Key UWA Booking Guidelines

Full payment is required within six months of booking. If you book more than six months in advance, a 50% deposit secures your permit, with the balance due 90 days before your trekking date. Permit fees cannot transfer between activities, and you cannot swap a trekking permit for a habituation permit.

Best Time to Trek

The dry season from December to early March and June to September offers the most comfortable trekking conditions. Trails are firm, and vegetation is thinner, making the chimps easier to spot. However, these months attract the highest visitor numbers, so book early.

If you want a quieter experience and more affordable accommodation rates, consider the low season in April, May, October, or November. Rain is common, but treks are often shorter because chimps stay closer to their usual feeding areas. Always book the morning session — afternoon weather in Uganda’s forests is unpredictable.

Key Trekking Rules

Maintain at least eight meters from the chimpanzees, keep your voice low, avoid eating near them, and never use flash photography. Stay behind if you feel unwell. Follow your ranger guide’s instructions at all times. Eat a full breakfast and use the facilities before entering the forest.
