A habituation permit gives you up to four hours with a semi-habituated group. Those extra hours change everything. You watch the gorillas feed, rest, play, and interact. What the Habituation Process Involves

Gorilla habituation is a careful and gradual journey. It can take two to three years before a gorilla family is fully comfortable around humans. When you join the habituation experience, you step into that ongoing process. You do not just watch the gorillas. You observe and assist as researchers gather data and respond to the animals’ reactions. Because these gorillas are not yet fully accustomed to visitors, the experience feels raw and genuine. There are no guarantees of calm, predictable behaviour. As a result, every moment feels alive with possibility.

To protect the gorillas, only four visitors are allowed into a habituation group per day. This limit keeps the experience intimate and ensures the animals are not overwhelmed. Therefore, permits sell out quickly, and demand is extremely high.

Permit Costs and How to Book

The Uganda Wildlife Authority issues all official gorilla habituation permits. Currently, a permit costs USD 1,500 for foreign non-residents. Foreign residents pay USD 1,000, and East African citizens are charged UGX 750,000.

However, it is important to note that new pricing takes effect on January 1, 2027. From that date, foreign non-residents will pay USD 1,800, foreign residents will pay USD 1,600, citizens from the rest of Africa will pay USD 1,000, and East African citizens will continue to pay UGX 750,000.

Because only four permits are available per habituation group each day, you must plan well in advance. The Best Time to Visit Rushaga

The dry season is the best time to take part in gorilla habituation in Rushaga. Bwindi sits close to the equator, so it experiences a tropical climate with two dry seasons each year. The first runs from June to September. The second runs from December to February.

During the dry season, the forest trails become firmer and easier to walk. Vegetation thins out, which means you can spot the gorillas more easily, even from a greater distance. The rugged terrain of Rushaga becomes far more manageable when the paths are dry. As a result, your chances of a successful and comfortable habituation experience increase significantly.

What to Expect on the Day

Gorilla habituation starts earlier than a standard gorilla trek. You need to arrive at the park briefing point by 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning. The activity begins at 7:30 am, a full hour before standard trekking groups depart. This early start ensures that you have maximum time in the forest with the gorillas.

Come prepared for a full day in rugged terrain. Wear sturdy waterproof hiking boots and long-sleeved clothing to protect against thorns and insects. Pack a breathable rain jacket, a warm layer for the cool morning air, insect repellent, plenty of water, and energy snacks. Bring a camera with extra batteries and memory cards so you can capture every moment. A walking stick helps enormously on steep and slippery paths.

Where to Stay Near Rushaga

After a long and rewarding day in the forest, you deserve a comfortable place to rest.
