Departure — 3:00 AM (Kigali time)
Your driver picks you up from your Kigali hotel at 3:00 AM. You board a comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle and head toward the Cyanika border crossing into Uganda. The early start is necessary to ensure you arrive at the park headquarters in time for the morning briefing. The drive takes approximately two to three hours, passing through beautiful hill country as dawn breaks over the landscape.
Arrival and Briefing
Upon arriving at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters, park rangers assemble all trekkers for a briefing session. During this briefing, rangers explain the rules and guidelines you must follow in the forest. They cover how to behave around the gorillas, what to do if a gorilla approaches, how to maintain the required seven-meter distance, and general safety procedures. Pay close attention — this information prepares you for a safe and enjoyable experience.
After the briefing, rangers divide trekkers into small groups. While the standard group size is eight, some trekking days — particularly during quieter seasons — may have groups of only two, three, or four. Smaller groups often lead to a more personal and intimate encounter with the gorillas.

The Trek
Armed rangers accompany your group as you enter the rainforest and begin the search for the Nyakagezi gorilla family. The terrain inside Mgahinga is open but can be steep and uneven in places. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, and bring a walking stick — the park provides these at the trailhead. Dress in long-sleeved shirts and long trousers to protect against vegetation and insects. Pack a rain jacket, as the mountain weather changes quickly.
The trek typically takes one to several hours, depending on the gorillas’ location that day. As you move through the forest, keep your eyes open for golden monkeys, birds, and other wildlife along the trail.
Meeting the Gorillas
When your guide locates the Nyakagezi family, the real magic begins. You spend one full hour in the presence of the mountain gorillas — watching them feed, interact, rest, and go about their daily lives. Your guide will remind you to stay at least seven meters away and to keep movements slow and calm. Do not make direct eye contact with the silverback. Switch off your camera flash and speak in low tones.
